Saturday April 4th 2015 was another amazing day in Kilmovee with hundreds of people flocking in glorious sunshine to Kilmovee to participate in the 6th annual 10k race, each and everyone having their own reasons for partaking. For some it was their first race in this seasons Mayo A/C calendar, others to compete in the Michael McDonnell memorial trophy, (a competition within the race to commemorate the life of Michael McDonnell a young man who passed away at 33 who was part of the 10k committee in its early years), and for others their ambition was to beat their times on previous years and perhaps having some connection with the charity. Regardless of those goals one of the aims was to raise as much funds as possible for the Mayo/Roscommon hospice with Kilmovee Shamrocks being the other beneficiary, with all monies from registrations divided equally between both and all other monies, donations and sponsorship’s going straight to Mayo/Roscommon hospice. The amounts raised will be published in the coming weeks when the final figures become available. Over the past 5 years over €30,000 has been raised for Mayo/Roscommon hospice.

‘One of the best organised races around’ was the verdict of many who flocked to Kilmovee for the 6th Annual 10k. Fair play to John Roddy and the whole Kilmovee Community, Kilmovee Shamrocks GAA club and lots of volunteers. The plan is to improve year on year and the evidence is clear. This year there was a record 588 runners ,joggers and walkers lined up at the start.
Organizing the 10k race and making improvements to it plays a big part of the lives of some members of Kilmovee Shamrocks with works starting on it months before. The village is a very busy place in the week leading up to and the morning of the race with volunteers out at 7am. The men do an amazing job organizing the race route , parking , start and finish line and traffic while the work of the ladies in the community centre with their fine spread of refreshments for all is second to none. It is this level of volunteerism that makes Kilmovee such a unique and special place.
The race committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all volunteers , those who did some home baking ,the Civil Defence and ambulance crew and the Gardai and anyone who help out in any way to make the 6th annual Kilmovee truly another memorable event. A special mention to Rupert Davis who does such a wonderful job on our web page, facebook page and with our online registrations.
This year’s race was won again by Matt Bidwell beating his own personal best and setting a course record,
with the first lady prize going to Katherine Shiel-Rankin of the UK and with Swinford connections. A full list of Mayo A/C winners is available on the Mayo A/C website.
A special mention to Ross Gannon who won this year Michael McDonnell Memorial Shield, this part of the competition means a great deal to the committee & organizers and we’d love to see many more schools & colleges enter in 2016.
